Can BOTOX® Prevent Wrinkles?

BOTOX® Cosmetic

BOTOX is known worldwide as one of the most effective anti-wrinkle treatments available. The vast majority of people who get BOTOX injections, though, want to minimize the appearance of lines and wrinkles already etched into their skin. But in the past few years, we started noticing younger patients come in for BOTOX injections at our Calgary practice to prevent wrinkles.

It’s not a coincidence that the uptick of interest in preventive BOTOX corresponds with the use of social media and the popularity of selfies. Women and men in their 20s and early 30s are constantly posting photos to multiple social apps and want to put their best faces forward. The number of people in that age group getting BOTOX and dermal filler injections are undoubtedly increasing.

In a recent survey, 64% of physicians who are members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reported seeing a dramatic increase in patients under the age of 30 requesting injectable treatments. Annual statistics from the ASPS confirm this trend, with BOTOX procedures increasing nearly 30% since 2010 among people ages 20 to 29.

So, is BOTOX actually able to delay the onset of facial wrinkles and lines for someone in their 20s?

How BOTOX Works

BOTOX is a neuromodulator that selectively weakens certain facial muscles to reduce crow’s feet, frown lines (the “11s”), and horizontal forehead wrinkles. These are called dynamic wrinkles because they are gradually caused by changing facial expressions. Because BOTOX injections limit the movement of the muscles involved in making these expressions, it can also postpone their development.

Your First BOTOX Treatment

The BOTOX procedure is fairly straightforward. During a consultation, your provider will explain what to expect and discuss your expectations for the treatment. You’ll also learn about the potential side effects and complications of BOTOX injections. That said, BOTOX is regarded as one of the safest cosmetic treatments available.

It is vital you choose a highly trained and experienced injector because the treatment requires precision. The procedure itself only lasts a few minutes and doesn’t involve any downtime. The results from BOTOX injections aren’t permanent, and they typically need to be repeated every 4 months or so to maintain the effects. Because the use of BOTOX to stave off wrinkles is a fairly new concept, it’s not yet known if patients will need less BOTOX in the future after wrinkles do begin emerging.
