A Brief Q&A With Dr. Byers

When did you first think about going to medical school?I began thinking about attending medical school in high school, but I was intimidated by the years of training needed to become a doctor. I pursued two careers before finally deciding that medicine was my right choice.
What led you to pursue plastic surgery as a specialty? My training as a physiotherapist provided me with an excellent anatomical background for a surgical specialty. Plastic surgery was a great fit due to my eye for detail and the intricate surgical skill required.
What procedure do you enjoy performing the most?I've never been able to answer this question because I enjoy the full breadth of plastic surgery. We are one of the few specialties that operate from head to toe.
What's the most significant change you've seen in the aesthetics field since you began practicing?Implant–based breast reconstruction is rapidly transforming in terms of the types of implants available, products that help maintain the implants' location, and where surgeons place implants in relation to chest muscles. This is a fascinating area of aesthetic reconstructive plastic surgery.
What would you be doing if you weren't a plastic surgeon? That's easy; I'd be practicing as a physiotherapist, presuming my major league baseball career failed to materialize.
Tell us a bit about your family.I was lucky enough to marry my high school sweetheart, and we have three beautiful children.
How do you spend your time when you’re not in the office?I like drawing and painting, playing piano, and travelling. But most of the time, you'll find me running, hiking, spending time with family at the lake, and cheering on the Flames and the Blue Jays!
