Is Liposuction for You?

Our patient-centred approach to plastic surgery includes helping you understand precisely what to expect when considering a procedure such as liposuction. If you maintain a healthy lifestyle, are at or near the ideal weight for your body, and have good skin elasticity, liposuction can help you achieve the leaner look you desire.

Liposuction Treatment Areas
Liposuction is appropriate for isolated pockets of fat in the following areas:

Thighs
Abdomen
Waist
Hips
Buttocks
Upper arms
Neck

It is essential to know that liposuction should be used for fine-tuning contours and is inappropriate for men and women looking for a weight loss procedure.

Your Liposuction Options

Liposuction is a very popular procedure. A thin cannula is inserted through a tiny incision to break up and suction fat cells from the body. Since its introduction several decades ago, the procedure has been improved with numerous innovations. Tumescent liposuction has become standard, reduces bruising, swelling, and bleeding, and facilitates improved results. It involves infusing the treatment area with a solution of IV fluid, lidocaine and epinephrine. This causes fat cells to become swollen and firm (tumescent), which makes them easier to break apart and remove. The solution also anesthetizes the area and temporarily shrinks blood vessels, limiting bleeding during the surgery and bruising post-op. The tumescent technique enhances your comfort both during and after the procedure and reduces bruising
and swelling.

Power-Assisted Liposuction (PAL)

PAL uses the tumescent technique described above, but the surgeon uses a specialized vibrating cannula to loosen and remove the fat cells instead of breaking them up with manual force. This results in improved comfort and reduced trauma to the surrounding tissues.

SAFELipo®

This technique incorporates both tumescent liposuction and PAL and features a 3-step process that helps ensure the contours of the treatment area appear natural, smooth and attractive. After the targeted fat cells are removed, the thin layer of remaining fat is smoothed to prevent lumps, dimpled skin, or other contour irregularities that can undermine liposuction results.

Your surgeon will recommend the optimal liposuction technique based on the treatment area, a physical examination, and aesthetic goals.

Combining Procedures

Liposuction is often combined with other procedures to provide more comprehensive results. At Macleod Trail Plastic Surgery, our experienced surgeons may recommend enhancing your other surgical procedures with liposuction to help achieve your cosmetic goals. A mommy makeover, for example, may combine a tummy tuck and breast augmentation with liposuction for women whose bodies have changed after having children.

Liposuction is used during many types of body contouring procedures, including:

Recovery

The tumescent technique limits post-surgical bruising and swelling, so you should find liposuction recovery relatively simple. Our surgeons recommend wearing compression garments for several weeks to help enhance the healing process.

You're encouraged to walk as soon as possible to maintain circulation and prevent complications. Many patients can return to work within a few days, although each person's recovery is unique. You can gradually increase your physical activities, but avoid strenuous exercise for about a month.

Liposuction results can be seen immediately, although you'll notice increased aesthetic improvements as swelling continues to subside during the first 3 months following the procedure. Because liposuction incisions are small, any scarring is fairly inconspicuous.
